FAQ

Questions players ask

What is pkmn?

A free online game made by fans, built on the Pokémon games from the Game Boy Advance and DS. You play the regions you know, in one world you share with other players.

Is it free?

Yes. Downloading and playing cost nothing. Later there will be an optional donation shop with cosmetic and convenience items. Nothing in it makes your Pokémon stronger in battle.

What do I need to play?

A computer running Windows, macOS or Linux, the pkmn client from our Depot, and your own legally obtained ROM files of the games. We don't provide ROMs. The wiki explains how to install and which ROMs work.

Which games can I play?

Kanto, Hoenn and Sinnoh are playable today, with the same character in each. The plan is to cover Generations 1 to 5.

Is it official?

No. pkmn is a fan project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Nintendo, Creatures Inc., GAME FREAK or The Pokémon Company.

Is it safe?

Download the client only from our Depot, which this site links to. We store passwords only as hashes, never sell your data, and run no ads or trackers. The Privacy Policy has the details. Players must be 13 or older, and the Code of Conduct applies to everyone.

Can I play with friends?

Yes. Everyone plays in the same world. You can add friends, chat, team up and watch each other's battles. The wiki has more on playing together.

What does beta mean here?

The game is still being built and tested by a small group. For now you need an invite to sign up. Expect bugs and changes, and possibly a reset of progress if a fix needs one. We announce every change in the release notes.

How do I report a bug?

Use the bug report option in the game. It sends us the details we need to track the problem down. If you can't get into the game, write to [email protected].

How do I delete my account?

Write to [email protected] from the email address on your account and ask. We delete it within 30 days. You can also ask for a copy of your data. The account page will do both for you later.

Can I support the project?

Playing, reporting bugs and telling your friends help the most. When the donation shop opens, you can support the project there too.
